Spotlighting Some of America’s Most Charitable Donors - Pt. 1
In today’s dynamic, often turbulent society, philanthropic initiative has arguably never been more important. Countless social changes, macroeconomic variables, global events, and other factors have spurred unprecedented urgency within our most vulnerable and significant communities and causes. Fortunately, each year, the US sees many of its most accomplished leaders and innovators set new charitable standards, a crucial guiding light influencing others to take action.
The following individuals are among several representing a collective effort to give back, lift up those in need, and ultimately position society to become more cohesive and equitable.
Michael Bloomberg
Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg topped the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “Philanthropy 50” list in 2023, contributing $3 billion to causes including, but not limited to, the arts, public health, education, and government enhancement. Bloomberg previously topped the list in 2019 and has been a top-three honoree from 2018-2023. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies and his personal giving, he has donated over $17.4 billion during his lifetime.
Penny and Phil Knight
In 2023, Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny ranked only behind Bloomberg in total charitable donations, recording $1.24 billion for causes ranging from cardiology research and neuroscience to international trade. This figure included a noteworthy pledge of $400 million to the 1803 Fund’s Rebuild Albina project, which aims to revitalize the once-vibrant Albina, a historically Black neighborhood in Portland, Oregon.
Michael and Susan Dell
Like the Knights, Michael and Susan Dell have a longstanding history of charitable involvement, expanding their reach through bodies like the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and the Michael and Susan Dell Donor Advised Fund. As a result, the Dells have given considerable sums throughout their philanthropic history, leveraging their foundation to donate over $2.4 billion to nonprofits in numerous countries.
Warren Buffett
Perhaps the most known and influential entrepreneur in modern business history, Warren Buffett has regularly utilized his considerable wealth for charitable good. In 2023 alone, Buffett gave over $800 million through his various foundations and philanthropic involvements. These efforts remain consistent with the legendary investor’s 2006 pledge to gradually give all of his Berkshire Hathaway stock to charitable causes.
John and Laura Arnold
Last year, John and Laura Arnold continued their storied tradition of philanthropic involvement by giving over $400 million to programs dedicated, in part, to criminal justice and reform and healthcare accessibility. Through the John and Laura Arnold Foundation, the pair remains committed to championing causes focused on societal advancement, equity, and infrastructural betterment.
